Just a short 90 kilometre drive south of Sydney is the marvellous coastal town of Wollongong. The drive itself is spectacular and takes in the Grand Pacific Drive as you head south to enjoy wonderful beaches and great water sports.

Wollongong is a perfect seaside destination for a day trip from Sydney. The beaches of Wollongong are superb, ideal for swimming and many watersports. Skydiving is one of the most popular pastimes in Wollongong together with cycling on the many cycle routes.

Wollongong has a plethora of dining locations to suit everybody’s palette.

Science Centre and Planetarium

A great indoor attraction for kids and families alike to spend the day, the Science Centre and Planetarium is a great hands-on venue and the biggest in NSW.

There are two floors of interactive and thrilling exhibits to get to grips with. Also a science theatre including the awesome planetarium itself.

The Centre’s souvenir shop is the largest of its kind in the whole of Australia and it has items that are designed to go along with the exhibits. Outside is a cafe, kiosk and outdoor picnic area.

The Beaches

Wollongong has some fantastic beaches and one of the main ones is Stanwell Park Beach, where there are golden sands and plenty of water based activities. The large reserve on the beaches’ edge is designed for families to get together and have barbeques, together with a kid’s playground.

Other great beaches are at Coledale, Austinmer, Thirroul, North Wollongong, and Windang. Also near Shellharbour is Lake Illawarra which is popular for sailing, kayaking and waterskiing.
